ABOUT ANTHONY ALDEN

Anthony Alden Vines, pen name Anthony Alden" is the youngest of ten children, eight boys and two girls. He grew up in Toledo, Ohio a small Midwestern city located on the doorsteps of Detroit, MI.

Anthony was blessed to have creative mentors all around him starting with his father the late photographer Clifton Vines.  Anthony was also mentored by seven brothers. The late Marvin Vines a national acclaimed fine artist and brother documentary photographer the late Thomas Vines set a standard of excellence for Anthony to reach for.

Anthonys Grandmother Ethel Washington was a concert pianist and Great Grandfather Cornelius Edwards started Toledo, Ohio's first African American newspaper 1922 "The Toledo Observer." In that same tradition Anthony launched Urban Flava Magazine one of the first Midwest urban hip-hop publications in 1998. 

"My family heritage is heavily endowed in the arts. I was exposed at a young age to the creative arts (photography, writing, painting and music) they were a natural part of my developing environment."


"As a child I would finger through the old family photo album. The photos mirrored kinship ties taken by my father, he was a U.S. postal carrier who carried a Twin Reflex Rolleicord camera in his mail bag. Back in the early 1950's my father was doing street photography before the term was recognized.

Anthony Aldens' passion for the visual arts inspired him to launch Soul On Canvas Media and 

The MarVines Creative Arts Foundation dedicated to advancing the creative spirit of African American visual and performing artists.



The Vines men are connected by four generations of photographers and writers.  Anthony's love for writing and photography blended nicely to convey his creative spirit as a photojournalist contributing to numerous regional and national publications like, Black Enterprise, Black Hair, 

X Urban Music Magazine, Urban Flava, Buzz Music Magazine, Trace Magazine, Endangered Magazine. Anthony Alden has also created several book projects, "Clinched Fist" The Anatomy of Rage and "Love Don't End with Goodbye" pending publishing in 2015 & 2016 and is currently working on a full length documentary "Endangered" The Choice Is Yours."

"It's not art if you aren't connected to your creative energy because of the restraints placed on you by high tech cameras and photo editing software. I still enjoy putting pencil to paper and pulling out an old manual film camera. My motto has always been...keeping i simple because creativity equals infinity."
